Abstract
Tris-(phenylimino)-1,3-diphenyl-1,2,3-propantrione has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The stable conformation found for this compound in solution was shown by NMR analysis to have an s-trans conjugated diimine segment covalently bonded to a magnetically isolated imine segment with the two segments perpendicular to each other. The stable, nonhelical conformation in this model compound implies that poly(iminomethylenes) need not generally be helical, as is frequently assumed.
