Double Ordering in Magnetic Linear Chain Systems

Abstract
CsNiCl3 and CsNiBr3 each display two magnetic phase transitions at low temperatures. The existence of a specific heat spike at each transition in these salts, together with cesium NMR data, require that the higher temperature phase be ordered in the c-axis spin components but paramagnetic in the remaining spin components. A reexamination of CsNiCl3 shows the cesium NMR data to be consistent with the spin structures in both ordered phases.
