Abstract
The bis(ethylenediamine)nickel(II) complex of permethylpolyazine is reported. The synthetic method used gives a polymer with alternate di-imine sites complexed to the metal ion. IR spectra of the monomer and polymer metal complexes are similar and demonstrate that interaction with the metal has changed the polymer geometry from all-trans to a mixture of cis and trans bonds. 1H NMR spectra show that the ethylenediamine chelate rings attain several conformations in the monomer metal complex, but that one ring conformation dominates in the polymer. The UV-vis spectrum of the monomer complex shows d–d, π–π* and MLCT bands, but in the polymer complex the d–d transitions are lost in the tails of the MLCT bands. This is consistent with band formation in the polyazine ligand.
