Abstract
The quadrupole coupling tensors and NMR shift tensors are reported for chlorine sites in RbFeCl3 and CsFeCl3. These data are combined with recently reported far-infrared data and temperature-dependent quadrupole splittings in the 57Fe Mössbauer spectra to give a consistent fit of the trigonal crystal field, spin-orbit interaction, covalency parameters, and the charge distributions in the lattices. The fit gives empirical estimates of dipole polarization and quadrupole shielding effects for the chloride ion. CsFeCl3 shows no evidence of ordering above 1.24 K.
